Topic: Insurance & Coding Exchange / Coding mistakes

Brad, the best opportunity for everyone across the nation is the CodeQuest that is sponsored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is presented in most states. NC usually is in Feb in Greesnboro. As far as common coding mistakes,I get a report montly from our insurance secretary that lets the techs know where they are making mistakes. The one mistake that will lose money for a practice is coding new and old patients incorrectly. You can not recoup revenue that is lost if you code a new patient as old. the ommission of modifiers will cause a claim to be rejected or it may have to be resubmitted. The tech who can code correctly will be a great asset to any physician.

Topic: Technician Exchange / Volunteering in Peru

I primarily ran the orperating room and assitsted in surgery. I did not have anyone else with me trained to assist or circulate so I had to teach really quickly. We did mostley Cataracts with some Discissions, Lens excange and conjunctival Nevus which we were sure that it was cancerous. I had three Ophthalmologists with me and we ran a clinic with one and alternted surgeons during the day. The most rewarding experience I have ever done. This was my second trip and I will go back if given the oppotunity. Hope you have a great trip and it is rewarding for you as it was for me. If you are at the annual JCAHPO meeting, come by and see me.

I, too, have volunteered in a developing country. I went to Zambia, Africa and will share experiences any time. Iwill be doing a lecture on this at the annual JCAHPO meeting.

Topic: Technician Exchange / ASC

I would like to pose a question to the practices who have their own ASC within the confines of their practice. Paperwork is a problem and I would like to know how the orders and the H&P are handled. We are on EMR and our surgery center will join us soon. Do we need to have a separate charting systems? Are the medications, medical history reviewed by the ASC or done in the office. Suggestions from others would be great.

Have you reached out to any of the COTP (Consortium of Ophthalmic Training Programs) member programs to see if they would share ideas and resources with you? I would think they would be a great starting place. Copy and paste this link to see a list of accredited programs:

Topic: Eye Care Marketing Exchange / COT/Marketing/tech trainer

I am new to this site, am a COT that has been in Ped.Ophth.7yrs, general optometry/ophth.13years, and have recently been given an new opportunity by the CEO of our ESOP in Denver, CO to create my own position basically to do internal marketing/patient education material, also to coach and train techs as they work toward becoming certified, assist with training on HRT/PHP/OPTOS retinal imaging to bring basic non certified assistants up to speed as well as remaining 2 days in my usual COT position. Anyone know of resources I can access as I create my “title” and plan of action and implementation of the marketing/training aspects? I have utilized JCAHPO material to attempt training programs in the past for our practice with limited success due to the high turn over of un-certified/front desk help turned techs that our HR person tends to “promote” when these employees get tired of front desk work. Our practice is moving in a more positive direction with our new CEO so I have fertile ground to help our practice grow in the technical training aspects and want to be more of a coach to motivated these young inexperienced techs to get serious about certification and becomeing more professional. Anyone info will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Patricia
