SUMMARY

Examine, diagnose, treat, and manage disorders of the visual system, eye diseases, and injuries; prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses as needed..

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform vision tests and analyze results.
  • Analyze test results and develop a treatment plan.
  • Diagnose sight problems, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness and eye diseases, such as glaucoma.
  • Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and medications.
  • Provide pre and post operative care to patients undergoing eye surgery—for example, examining a patient’s eyes the day after cataract or laser vision correction surgery.
  • Evaluate patients for the presence of diseases such as diabetes and refer patients to other healthcare providers as needed.
  • Promote eye health through counseling patients. For example, proper care of contact lenses.
  • Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • Practice Optometry in accordance with applicable standards of professional conduct at designated locations.
  • Apply appropriate clinical medical judgment in examining and treating patients.
  • Timely and accurately complete and maintain all medical records with respect to patient care in accordance with the policies and procedures of employer, and all forms and ancillary records which may be required by policy, or others in connection with such care.
  • Document activities using the appropriate designated forms for group-wide use.
  • Maintain his or her professional competence and skills commensurate with generally accepted professional standards as required by law to maintain his / her State license.
  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Displays consistent professionalism.
  • Works to build teamwork between the clinical staff and other areas of clinic.
  • Communicates directly and effectively with physicians and administrator.

WORK QUALITIES

Position requires good communication and leadership skills.  An understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care is essential.  Knowledge of medical instrumentation and its proper care and usage needed.  Ability to assess common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environment required.  Ability to manage and communicate departmental needs to administration and physicians as  necessary.  Must have the ability to interface with all RMEC departments, physicians, and personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree program completed.
  • Current state license to practice.
  • Maintain licensure through continuing education.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to type and perform data entry.
  • Must be able to hold arms at shoulder height.
  • Must be able to communicate via phone.
  • Must have manual dexterity to work with ophthalmic equipment.
  • Must be able to drive.
