FULL TIME COA / ROP COORDINATOR

We are seeking a full time Certified Ophthalmic Technician who has experience in  pediatrics and particularly with ROP patients. This person would partner with our two Pediatric Ophthalmologists and Peds Orthoptist at both Wake Forest Baptist Health (Winston Salem) and Davie Medical Center (Bermuda Run).

JOB SUMMARY:  Oversees and manages continuity and cross specialty care for infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery by the ROP Ophthalmologists. The premature infants are screened and followed through early adulthood for ophthalmic sequalae, specifically retinopathy of prematurity, related to the lack of early central nervous system development associated with premature birth. The process requires coordination, management, tracking of appointments and follow up care within Ophthalmology and other specialties. A high incidence of medical liability exists if this care is not well managed and tracked. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Certification as Ophthalmic Assistant or Technician and two years' experience in ophthalmology. Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.  

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:  Current license as certified ophthalmic assistant or technician in North Carolina. Nursing license if applicable. Infant and Child CPR certification preferred - if not satisfied at time of hire, certification training will be provided. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
1.   Delivers high quality care coordination services of for ROP population. Collects full patient data during the intake process, establishes clear and written care pathways and procedures, and assists patient/parents with care coordination and continuity of care with the Ophthalmology specialty. 
2.   Serves as a navigator for patients receiving services at multiple locations. Assists with direct patient care as needed, under the direction of a physician.  Participates in phone and patient medical record triage to coordinate patient care logistics.  
3.   Responsible for managing processes, schedules, and patient to meet and exceed annual productivity and quality based metrics for Ophthalmology services. 
4.   Maintains clinical records to document care and assists Pediatric Ophthalmology Program Director with the ROP program.  Completes accurate data for the care scheduling system and builds a strong referral network to support the program. 
5.   Ensures clinical quality of region, center, satellite, and branch.  Oversees intake process and ensures assignment of cases for clinical quality and equity, monitoring charting practices. 
6.   Provides clinical risk management leadership through adherence to policies and practices in alignment with ROP standard of care and the Medical Center, internal trainings and developing risk management prevention practices. 
7.   Obtains preauthorization for services, facilitates referrals, and distributes financial information to ensure maximum reimbursement.  Ensures patients/parents receive all necessary information regarding care and financial responsibility. Develops relationship with patients/families providing a consistent point of contact to access all necessary services within the Medical Center. 
8.   Facilitates a compassionate environment through communication with physicians, patients/families, and vendors. Utilizes appropriate resources and referral services to address patient/family needs. 
9.   Maintains professional development.  Participates in identifying personal learning needs based on job performance and changes in job requirements. Attends training courses as identified by Director.  Identifies alternative resources for professional development.  Attends all required in-services. 
10. Supports all other Ophthalmology Pediatric programs. Serves as Point of Contact for all pediatric care including one- call escalation pools, scheduling protocols, scheduling escalations, and access to care.
