Has anyone had any experience volunteering in Peru?

I have not volunteered in Peru, but have volunteered in the Philipines and it was a great experience.

I, too, have volunteered in a developing country. I went to Zambia, Africa and will share experiences any time. Iwill be doing a lecture on this at the annual JCAHPO meeting.

That´s so fantastic. What type of stuff did you do on these trips? Were in assisting in surgeries or helping with glasses? How long did you go for on average?

I primarily ran the orperating room and assitsted in surgery. I did not have anyone else with me trained to assist or circulate so I had to teach really quickly. We did mostley Cataracts with some Discissions, Lens excange and conjunctival Nevus which we were sure that it was cancerous. I had three Ophthalmologists with me and we ran a clinic with one and alternted surgeons during the day. The most rewarding experience I have ever done. This was my second trip and I will go back if given the oppotunity. Hope you have a great trip and it is rewarding for you as it was for me. If you are at the annual JCAHPO meeting, come by and see me.

I am interested in volunteering. Is there a directory for technicians and ROUBs? Any tips on where to begin looking?

A couple good websites to check out are

Depending on where you are located there is also Alliance Medical Ministry in Raleigh (www.alliancemedicalministry.org) although I’m sure there are similare places in most larger cities.

It’s very rewarding to go out of the country to help with a surgical team. I’ve been to Chiapas (southern Mexico) with one of our surgeons. Like Sandra, I found I was the only trained surgical(CST)/ophthalmic(COT) tech and had to quickly help some rn’s/lpn’s get up to speed on assisting with ECCEs (no phacos). We did manage to do about 175 surgeries (between 5 teams) that weekend. I made a powerpoint of that trip and have shown it at a few of our local Lion’s Clubs.

Thank You for all the information on mission work! I just returned from San Pedro Sula, Honduras where we did 198 cataract surgeries. It was a wonderful experience. I traveled with Vision Outreach International and highly recommend them to anyone interested in doing a mission.
