The ophthalmic technician has the front line responsibility to handle patient inquiries about nutraceuticals and eye care and focusing the doctor on ways to enhance patient care and positively impact practice revenues. Ample research demonstrates the positive benefits of nutritional supplements, particularly Omega-3 fatty acids, as an adjunct to standard pharmacotherapy in the care and treatment of our patients, particularly those with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and dry eye syndrome (DES). With so much recent evidence (see some of the studies posted at the bottom of this posting) suggesting that nutritional supplements may play a role in the prevention and treatment of several ophthalmic diseases, we as health care providers must ask ourselves, “What is our role in this industry?” As a private practice eye doctor for 30 years, I now work with other eye doctors and their staff to set up the turn-key implementation steps to incorporate high quality, pharmaceutical grade nutritionals supplements into your practice to enhance patient care and, at the same time, add practice revenues to the bottom line. You or your staff may call for more information. Mark Slosar, O.D., F.A.A.O. cell 949-310-9926 mark@drmarkslosar.com
