O.D. certification. Will it be valuable?

Is O.D. board certification suggested by AOA necessary?
If this certification passes, could it put ODs under more scrutiny?
Usually board certifications occur after graduate school, residency, intense tests, etc. This cert would not even require residency?
What is the point of being certified? Is it to keep ODs up-to-date on changes in their profession? Are the required CE regular and/or TQ tests to keep OD’s licenses current enough to keep them informed about technological, etc. changes?
