The demand for eye care is increasing, and this dynamic will intensify over the coming 10-20 years. Two important factors are fueling the growth in eye care demand. First, as the sizable baby boomer generation grows older, it becomes more in need of all types of healthcare, especially eye care. Secondly, the world’s population is becoming less healthy, including significant impact from diseases such as diabetes.
Diabetes greatly impacted our parents and grandparents, but over the past decade the impact has broadened as young people are developing Type Two diabetes at an increased rate. Type Two diabetes is now the most common form of diabetes. Millions of Americans already have it, and even more are at high risk.
People with diabetes are 40% more likely to be diagnosed with eye care related illnesses, such as glaucoma. With more people being diagnosed daily, the need for eye care professionals is growing.
