For the past few decades the Baby Boomers have dominated the American workforce, but as many boomers are hitting the age of retirement there is a new generation taking center stage. The Millennials, aka Gen Y, will make up over 50% of the workforce within the next four years.
Gen Y is classified as those born between 1977-1997 and make up an impressive 75 million of the US population. Gen Y, like past generations, has been shaped by major events and world leaders, but primarily, Gen Y has been the most influenced by the vast advancements in technology. 97% of the Millennials have their own personal computer, allowing them to have constant access to the internet.
As new media started to burst across the web, Gen Y has grown up in a society with instant communication making them focused on peer relationships. Many companies, such as Local Eye Site, are realizing the importance to connect with the newest generation entering the workforce. The best recruiting strategies include reaching out to the Gen Y and starting a conversation in a social media setting. Using sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn to post position descriptions is a great way to get information out about an opening in your company or practice.
A Facebook fan page is another way to get your company in front of Gen Yers, but be careful about using Facebook as a primary recruiting tool. It is a channel that most Millianials view as a personal site and recruiting directly to them through Facebook can been seen as a violation of their privacy, especially if it seems like a company is basing job opportunities on the personal information posted. The Facebook page should be an informational page about your company, that post updates in an informal setting.
With Gen Y starting to dominate the workforce it is critical for your company or practice to be on the internet. In today’s society if you are not wired in, you are not found.
