The Francis I. Proctor Foundation for Research in Ophthalmology

ORBIS is a nonprofit, global development organization whose mission is to eliminate avoidable blindness by strengthening the capacity of local eye health partners in their efforts to prevent and treat blindness. Through the principles of capacity building, local partners gain self-sufficiency in eye health care, and residents enjoy quality eye health services that are affordable, accessible and sustainable.

ORBIS needs volunteers to plan fundraising events and raise awareness of ORBIS’s sight-saving work in developing nations. Our offices also need assistance on occasion with special mailings or other specific needs. The organization has found a way to unite doctors, nurses, students, and other people, especially younger people, across borders, across economic status, and across professional lines. You can help by:

Guiding Eyes for the Blind

Raise a puppy for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a non-profit guide dog school. Puppy Raisers open their hearts and homes to 9 week old future guide dogs for their first 14-16 months of life, then return them to Guiding Eyes for the Blind for specialized guide dog training. Raisers teach puppies socialization, house manners and basic obedience. Puppy Raisers are needed in the following states: CT, ME, VT, NH, MA, DE, OH, MD, VA, & NC.

VOSH/International (VI) is a 35-year-old non-governmental organization dedicated to the provision of eye and vision care services for those below poverty level and without access to local eye care.

VOSH International is the parent organization of 34 regional chapters and 25 student chapters in the United States, Canada, Honduras, India, Africa, South America and the Netherlands. The chapters are comprised of optometrists, ophthalmologists, opticians, and other volunteers.  On December 6, 2001 VOSH/International signed a declaration with the World Council of Optometry and the World Health Organization to eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020. Each year VOSH Chapters average between 80 and 90 missions serving in excess of 100,000 people.

Today, the Lighthouse is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to helping people of all ages overcome the challenges of vision loss. We now have a corps of more than 1,500 dedicated volunteers who are continuing the Holts’ visionary legacy. Volunteer opportunities include:
